Extra-Large Duvets, 220 x 240 cm – Why a Duvet for Two Feels So Good

What sleep research says about sleeping with a partner, and what to look for in extra-large duvets measuring 220 x 240 cm.

As the days grow shorter and temperatures drop, our sleep patterns change as well. We go to bed earlier, pull the blanket up higher, and seek closeness with our partner. This isn’t just about coziness. Physical closeness is soothing, provides warmth, and can even affect the quality of our sleep.

At the same time, many couples are familiar with that little nightly tug-of-war: one person rolls over, taking the blanket with them, and the other is suddenly left out in the cold. This rarely has anything to do with thoughtlessness. Most of the time, the blanket is simply too small for two.

The 220 x 240 cm comforter solves this problem. It is sized so that two people can fit comfortably under it together, even if they move around in their sleep.

What Research Says About Sleeping as a Couple

For a long time, it was assumed that couples sleep better on their own. People who sleep next to someone else move around more and are disturbed more often. However, a research team led by sleep researcher Henning Johannes Drews of the University Medical Center Schleswig-Holstein in Kiel came to a surprising conclusion.

For the study, twelve young couples spent several nights in a sleep lab, sometimes alone and sometimes together. In addition to their body movements, their brain waves, breathing, and heart activity were also recorded. While the participants did indeed move slightly more when they were together, this did not result in poorer sleep. The REM phases—that is, dream sleep—were actually longer and less frequently interrupted when the participants slept together.

REM sleep plays an important role in processing emotions and experiences. Researchers therefore suspect that sleeping together may contribute to greater emotional balance. In addition, the study showed that the couples’ sleep patterns became more similar to one another, and this trend was stronger the closer the relationship was perceived to be. Since only a small number of couples were studied, the results cannot be generalized. However, they do offer an intriguing insight into why closeness feels so good at night.

Closeness, Warmth, and the “Cuddle Hormone”

Our bodies themselves provide part of the explanation. When we are touched or have physical contact, our bodies release the hormone oxytocin. It has a calming effect, reduces stress, and thus makes it easier to fall asleep. You can read more about this in our article “Oxytocin—How the ‘Cuddle Hormone’ Promotes Restful Sleep.”

Then there’s the issue of warmth. Sleep specialists recommend a bedroom temperature between about 16 and 19 degrees, since the body needs to cool down slightly at night to sleep soundly. Under a shared blanket, two people keep each other warm. There’s no gap in the middle for cold air to seep through, and cold feet are forgotten more quickly. This way, you can combine a cool bedroom with a cozy, warm bed.

One blanket for two: Still the exception in Germany

A representative survey conducted by YouGov in the spring of 2026 on behalf of the online retailer Galaxus shows just how differently couples in Europe sleep. While in Italy and France about four out of five couples sleep under a shared blanket, in Germany three out of five couples prefer separate blankets. Nevertheless, Germans see the closeness and cuddling as the biggest advantage of sharing a bed.

One detail from the survey is particularly revealing: In France, where sharing a blanket is the norm, one in four people gets annoyed by someone stealing the blanket. This shows what often causes the “partner blanket” to fail—not the idea itself, but the size. So if you want to share a blanket, you shouldn’t skimp on the size.

Duvets in the 220 x 240 or 240 x 220 cm?

The 220 x 240 cm comforter is 220 cm wide and 240 cm long. In stores, you’ll often find the same size listed as a 240 x 220 cm duvet. It’s common to list the dimensions as width by length, but not every manufacturer uses this convention consistently. Checking the product description will quickly clear things up.

The generous length has a pleasant side effect: Even tall people have plenty of room and won’t have their feet hanging off the edge when they stretch out. You can find an overview of all standard sizes on our duvet page.

What kind of bed is this large duvets suitable for?

The 220 x 240 cm comforter is best suited for double beds that are 160, 180, or 200 cm wide. On narrower beds, it hangs slightly further over the sides, which many couples find comfortable because neither person ends up without a comforter when they roll over. For a bed that’s 140 cm wide, however, this size is usually too large. In this case, a 200 x 200 cm comforter is the better choice.

Warmth Level and Duvet Cover

Since two people share a blanket and keep each other warm, a double blanket often feels warmer than a single blanket of the same warmth rating. If you tend to sweat easily at night, you’re better off choosing a slightly lighter option. You can find out which warmth rating is right for you on our page about down duvets.

When choosing a duvet cover, keep in mind that it must fit the duvet exactly. A cover that’s too small will compress the filling, causing the duvet to lose its loft and provide less warmth. You can find duvet covers in the 220 x 240 cm size in our Bed Linen category.

When It Makes More Sense to Use Two Blankets

As nice as a shared blanket is, it isn’t right for every couple. If one person gets cold easily while the other tends to sweat, or if both have very different sleep schedules, two separate blankets are often the more comfortable solution. This says nothing about the relationship, but only reflects different needs at night.
