Energy and resource use
billerbeck regularly reviews which areas of its operations could use energy and other resources more efficiently. This review is based, amongst other things, on internal consumption data, technical assessments and the results of the statutory energy audits.
Environmental Management in accordance with DIN EN ISO 14001
Since 2019, billerbeck’s environmental management system has been certified to DIN EN ISO 14001. This certification provides a binding framework for systematically identifying relevant environmental aspects, setting environmental objectives and implementing appropriate measures.
The environmental management system is monitored annually. This involves reviewing, amongst other things, environmental objectives, measures, operational key performance indicators and the effectiveness of existing processes.
On this basis, billerbeck continuously refines its environmental management and regularly assesses in which areas environmental performance can be improved through specific measures.
Electricity from photovoltaic systems and green electricity
billerbeck uses electricity generated by its own solar panel system. Any additional electricity required is sourced as green electricity. This means that 100 per cent of the electricity procured by billerbeck – and therefore also used in the production of bedding – comes from renewable energy sources.
Packaging – Recyclable carrier bags
When it comes to our bedding, we take into account the materials used, product protection and options for recycling after use.
billerbeck bedding is packed in recycled and recyclable carrier bags. These protect the products during storage and transport and can – depending on the local waste disposal and recycling infrastructure – be channelled into the appropriate recycling stream.
Any statements regarding recyclability or the materials used refer to the specific packaging and the technical information available for it.
Efficient temperature control
One example is the automated temperature control in our offices. Heating times are adjusted to suit operational needs in order to avoid consuming heating energy outside the required periods of use.
Electric mobility and charging infrastructure
Furthermore, we use electric vehicles as company cars and have set up our own charging infrastructure for this purpose.
Energy audits and LED lighting
Regular energy audits are carried out to record relevant energy consumption and identify potential improvements. Based on these assessments, the lighting, amongst other things, has been gradually converted to LED technology.
Modernisation of plant and buildings
We also take energy consumption into account when modernising production plant and buildings. For example, technical systems have been replaced and optimised, including an extraction system, heating systems and a compressed air compressor.
Further measures include improving the thermal insulation of individual buildings and the purchase of new machinery. Depending on the measure, this can reduce energy consumption, material losses, waste generation or dust emissions. The actual impacts are assessed – where available – using operational data.
Health and Safety
When selecting and modernising technical systems, we also take health and safety requirements into account. Where technically relevant, this includes measures to reduce noise emissions.
Transport and Logistics
In the area of transport and logistics, we use planned transport routes to avoid empty runs wherever possible and to make transport processes more efficient.
