A freshly made bed is twice as good to sleep in. It feels extremely comfortable, smells wonderful and also contributes significantly to a healthy sleeping environment. On average, we spend a third of our lives sleeping and usually lie in our bed. Nevertheless, opinions often differ when it comes to changing bed linen. Some do it weekly, others wait longer. But how often does it actually make sense? Are there differences depending on the season? And what factors play a role when it comes to hygiene? In this article, we look at all these questions and provide valuable tips on how to change and care for bed linen correctly.

How often should bed linen be changed?

It is generally recommended that bed linen is changed approximately every one to two weeks. This recommendation is primarily based on hygienic aspects. During sleep, the human body not only releases moisture and heat. We also shed numerous flakes of skin, which can collect in the textiles along with sweat and bacteria.

If you sweat a lot at night, have allergies or an infection, you should change your bed linen even more frequently. We recommend a weekly change or even every few days. But why is that the case? Allergy sufferers react to the excretions of the house dust mite. This mite feels particularly at home in a damp and warm environment. In the case of an allergy, the bed linen should be washed weekly at a minimum of 60 °C.

What influence does the season have?

The frequency of bed linen changes can also depend on the season. In summer, when temperatures rise, we naturally sweat more. Lightweight fabrics such as cotton, linen or silk are particularly breathable and ensure a comfortable sleeping environment even at high temperatures. Nevertheless, bed linen should ideally be changed once a week in summer.

In winter, on the other hand, when you sweat less, it may be sufficient to change the bed linen every two to three weeks.

Our tips for changing and washing bed linen correctly

When washing bed linen, you should pay attention to the right temperature depending on the material. This can also be found on the care label of the respective bed linen and should be observed. Cotton, for example, can usually be washed at 60 °C, which – as already mentioned – reliably eliminates bacteria and mites.

Bed linen is best dried in the fresh air. This ensures a pleasant fragrance and has an antibacterial effect. The UV radiation from the sun, the oxygen in the air and the low humidity outside are known to have an antibacterial effect. A tumble dryer can be particularly helpful in winter. However, it should be used gently so as not to damage the fibers of the bed linen.

Washing and care of comforters, pillows and toppers

Not only the covers, but also comforters, pillows and toppers should be cleaned regularly. Of course, you should always pay attention to the respective filling material and the manufacturer’s instructions on the care label.
