Why does a duvet need to be washed at all?

We change and wash our clothes quite frequently as we wear them directly on our bodies. We should not forget that we spend a third of our lives sleeping and therefore literally come into contact with our bedding. Not all soiling can be absorbed or absorbed by the covers, so the duvet itself is also due for cleaning at some point. Moisture from night sweats, flakes of skin, mites and dust are removed. The duvet regains its full potential for heat retention and moisture regulation, becomes lighter again and smells pleasant.

How often do you wash a duvet?

With careful care such as daily airing and if no visible soiling has occurred, it is sufficient to wash the duvet about once or twice a year. Down duvets should be washed as rarely as possible, as down is naturally dirt-repellent. Anyone who suffers from house dust allergies should give their duvet a clean two to four times a year. When cleaning, please refrain from using hoovers or carpet beaters. They do more harm than good with duvets.

How do I wash my duvet?

It is very important that you follow the information on the care instructions on the duvet, the small label that is usually sewn into the edge. The washing symbols on it tell you whether you can wash the duvet in the washing machine, if so, at how many degrees and whether it is suitable for the tumble dryer afterwards.

Wash duvet in the washing machine

If you want to be on the safe side, you should consider professional duvet cleaning. If you want to do it yourself and the washing instructions give the green light for cleaning in the washing machine, you should note the following:

  • Check the duvet for damage before washing.
  • Only wash the duvet individually in the washing machine without other laundry.
  • Make sure that the drum is large enough, a capacity of 6/7 kilograms upwards is necessary. Ideally, the drum should only be half full. You should always refrain from forcing the duvet into the machine. On the one hand, this can damage it, and on the other, it needs space during the wash cycle to get properly clean. If the duvet does not fit, it is best to go to a professional dry cleaner or a launderette where there are washing machines with a larger load capacity.
  • When washing, use a liquid mild detergent or, in the case of a down duvet, a special down detergent. We also recommend the Blue Wash-Egg from billerbeckfind out more, which gently cleans duvets. Heavy-duty detergents and fabric softeners should be avoided as they can damage or clog down, for example.
  • How hot should duvets be washed? Always follow the washing label for the temperature. Microfibre duvets, down and feather duvets and cotton duvets can generally be washed at up to 60 °C, camel hair, cashmere and silk duvets – if at all – at 30 °C.
  • You should only spin the duvet at the lowest possible speed (e.g. 400 revolutions per minute), otherwise the forces generated can break the feathers in down duvets. Fibre duvets can also be spun at 800 rpm.
  • If the duvet is suitable for tumble drying, please select the appropriate programme for the respective material, e.g. the down programme for down duvets.

Washing natural hair duvets

If it is not possible to wash natural hair duvets  such as cashmere, virgin sheep’s wool or camel hair, it is also sufficient to air the duvet regularly and extensively. This allows moisture to evaporate and the positive properties of self-cleaning come into play. Dust and dirt simply do not stick to natural hair.
