Side sleeper
Do you sleep badly or don’t feel properly rested in the morning? This could perhaps be because your “sleeping equipment” does not support your sleeping position properly. Your main sleeping position – on your side, stomach or back – should determine the choice of mattress, slatted frame and pillow. We give side, back and stomach sleepers individual tips on the right “sleeping equipment” – so that you can improve your sleeping comfort.
More than half of all people are side sleepers. This sleeping position is extremely popular as it relieves pressure on the back.
The right pillow for side sleepers – side sleeper pillows
For side sleepers, the pillow should fill the shoulder-neck triangle and hold the head up to prevent the cervical spine from bending or overstretching. This is why side sleepers like to cuddle their pillow so that it supports their head well. The pillow should not be too soft for this. A special side sleeper pillow supports the preferred sleeping position. This is because this specially shaped pillow – such as the SINUS from billerbeck – stabilises the body in the lateral position. They provide relaxing support for arms and legs and relieve pressure on the spine.

The right mattress for side sleepers
When choosing a mattress, side sleepers should ensure that the cervical spine is relieved and that the shoulder area cannot sink in. The mattress must adapt to the hips and shoulders to such an extent that the spine is neither bent sideways nor pressure is exerted on the hips and shoulders. Ideally, the spine should form a straight line. A mattress that is too hard will not allow the body to sink in properly, resulting in a kink in the spine. A mattress that is too soft allows the spine to sag, which also leads to a bent posture.

The right slatted frame for side sleepers
A slatted frame with an integrated shoulder drop is recommended for side sleepers. This allows the shoulder area to sink in more when lying on your side. In the lateral position, it is important that the spine is supported and the hips can sink in. For this reason, the slatted frame should have a centre zone adjustment, especially for side sleepers, with the help of which the hardness of the slats can be individually adjusted to the body shape.
