After an extensive party, many people realise time and again that alcohol does not necessarily contribute to a better night’s sleep. Rather, it disturbs the sleep rhythm.
Although you fall asleep quite quickly after a night of drinking, there is a risk of unwanted waking phases throughout the night. In the second half of the sleep phase, the quality of sleep is impaired. Alcohol suppresses the deep sleep phases. Waking states occur more frequently and the overall quality of sleep is poorer.
Alcohol stresses the organism and the nervous system during sleep. The body receives fewer rest and recovery phases as it is busy breaking down the alcohol. Your bedmates also suffer from your partner’s alcohol consumption: alcohol increases snoring as it leads to additional muscle relaxation.
Only small amounts of alcohol, such as a glass of wine or beer, promote sleep.
