But in addition to these visible and measurable effects, many people have another question: does a solar storm also affect our bodies and our sleep? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The short answer is: the scientific situation is not clear. Nevertheless, there are indications and field reports that suggest that geomagnetic activities of the solar storm may well have an influence on our well-being. Reason enough to take a closer look at the topic &#8211; especially with regard to our sleep.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"what-is-a-solar-storm\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is a solar storm?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A solar storm is caused by strong eruptions on the surface of the sun. Large quantities of charged particles &#8211; also known as solar wind &#8211; are hurled into space. When these particles hit the Earth&#8217;s magnetic field, geomagnetic storms can occur, which are often referred to as magnetic storms.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Earth&#8217;s magnetic field acts as a protective shield that intercepts a large proportion of this radiation. At the same time, these interactions can give rise to visible phenomena such as auroras. Particularly intense solar activity can also cause interference with satellites, radio links or power grids.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While these technical effects are well documented, the question of possible effects on the human body is much more complex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"solar-storm-effects-on-the-body-what-is-known\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Solar storm: effects on the body &#8211; what is known?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The effects that a solar storm can have on the body have not yet been conclusively clarified scientifically. Although there are isolated studies that investigate possible links between geomagnetic activity and certain physiological processes &#8211; for example in the cardiovascular system or the nervous system &#8211; the results so far are inconsistent and do not allow any clear conclusions to be drawn about the effects of a solar storm on the body. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some research suggests that strong geomagnetic fluctuations could be accompanied by minimal changes in heart rhythm or blood pressure. A possible influence on the autonomic nervous system is also being discussed. However, these effects are generally very small and have not been clearly proven scientifically.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, some people report physical complaints during phases of increased solar activity. These include headaches, inner restlessness, a feeling of exhaustion or concentration problems. Changes in mood or increased irritability are also occasionally mentioned.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is important to make a clear classification here: these so-called physical symptoms in connection with a solar storm are predominantly based on subjective perceptions. A direct, causally proven connection between solar storms and specific health complaints is currently not proven. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"solar-storms-and-the-psyche-what-role-does-our-perception-play\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Solar storms and the psyche &#8211; what role does our perception play?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to possible physical effects, the influence of solar storms on the psyche is often discussed. In fact, individual perception plays a central role here. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When a natural phenomenon is present in the media or is consciously perceived, many people pay more attention to their own sensations. Small changes in well-being that would otherwise be barely noticeable are suddenly registered more intensely and associated with the event. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In psychology, this is also referred to as the nocebo effect: the expectation that something could be stressful increases your own perception of restlessness, tiredness or stress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This does not mean that you are just imagining these sensations. Rather, it shows how closely the body and psyche are linked and how sensitively we can react to external influences, especially in times of stress, increased strain or unbalanced sleep. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"solar-storm-and-sleep-is-there-a-connection\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Solar storm and sleep &#8211; is there a connection?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The question of whether a solar storm can have an effect on our sleep is particularly interesting. Here, too, the study situation is not clear. There are only isolated studies that analyze possible connections between geomagnetic activity and sleep behavior, but without providing clear or consistent results.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our sleep is largely controlled by the so-called circadian rhythm: our internal clock. This reacts sensitively to external influences such as light, temperature and environmental conditions. Whether electromagnetic changes, such as those that occur during solar storms, also play a role here has not yet been conclusively clarified scientifically.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some research approaches deal with the question of whether geomagnetic activity could influence hormonal processes, in particular melatonin production. Melatonin is the hormone that regulates our sleep-wake rhythm and makes us tired. A direct link between solar storms and measurable changes in melatonin synthesis has not yet been reliably proven.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nevertheless, some people report restless nights, longer periods of falling asleep or less restful sleep during phases of increased solar activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is important to note that the possible influence of a solar storm on sleep &#8211; if any &#8211; would be indirect and vary from person to person. Factors such as stress, existing sleeping habits or personal perception currently play a much greater role. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"why-some-people-react-more-sensitively\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why some people react more sensitively<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It is striking that not all people react equally to such external influences. While some do not notice any changes, others report noticeable differences in well-being or sleep. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Individual sensitivity is an important factor. People who already suffer from sleep problems, stress or inner restlessness often perceive changes more intensely. Existing sleep deficits or unbalanced sleep hygiene can further intensify such effects.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People who regularly feel tired or suffer from a lack of sleep generally react more sensitively to external stimuli &#8211; regardless of whether it is noise, light or geomagnetic activity. Those who assume that a solar storm will affect their sleep pay more attention to possible changes &#8211; and perceive them more intensely. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"what-helps-with-restless-sleep-regardless-of-solar-storms\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What helps with restless sleep &#8211; regardless of solar storms?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Regardless of whether a solar storm actually influences our sleep or not, the following applies: the basis for restful nights lies in a stable quality of sleep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A regular sleep rhythm, a quiet and stimulus-reduced environment and fixed evening routines help the body to adjust to the night. It is particularly important to reduce external disruptive factors such as artificial light, screen use or noise in the evening. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sleeping climate also plays a decisive role.
